Planning and Zoning is a
division of the Department of Public Services. We are dedicated to guiding
the development in the City so that essential services are provided while
continuing sustainable development.
Planning and Zoning works closely with the Chamber of
Commerce, the Sweetwater Economic Development Association (SWEDA), and the Sweetwater County Planning and Zoning.
Our
primary day-to-day functions include the review of public
and private development projects and development of short and long range
planning goals. We consider zone change and special use permit
applications, and make recommendations to the
Rock Springs
Planning and Zoning Commission.
These pages are intended to help answer some of the common questions and provide
information about the responsibilities of this division of City
Government.
What is a Zone?
The town is shaped by its land uses. The city
controls the use of land by designating what uses land may be put to,
such as this area is for single family homes, this for apartments, this
for small businesses and this for industry.
These designations of land use are zones and are
established by the city council in ordinances. See the Zoning
Regulations in the column at the left.
